Cells & Cell Theory Flashcards
Define cell theory
- all living things are made out of cells
- all living things are composed of cells
- the cell is the smallest unit of life
- cells only arise from pre-existing cells (mitosis + meiosis)
Paramecium characteristics of life: cell structure
It’s a single celled eukaryote
Paramecium characteristics of life:energy and matter
- Waste products from digestion are excreted from anal pore, exchanges matter with the environment
- Eats smaller unicellular organism in order to obtain energy and matter
Paramecium characteristics of life: reproduction
- The cell will grow until it reaches maximum capacity and at that point it will divide
- The cell divides via mitosis to make another nuclei before the cell reproduces asexually
(Two paramecium can fuse together before reproduction)
Paramecium characteristics of life: Response
It can control the beating of cilia to love in different directions in response to changes in the environment
Paramecium characteristics of life: Homeostasis
It will contain water in contractive vacuoles which will expel the water
Chlamydomonas characteristics of life: made of cells
Eukaryotic- single celled organism
Paramecium characteristics of life: response
Has a sensitive eyespot the allies the organism chladyomonas to sense light and swim using its flagella
Paramecium characteristics of life: exchange energy and matter
- Chladyomonas is an autotroph uses photosynthesis to obtain energy and matter
- The oxygen from photosynthesis diffuses through the cell membrane
Paramecium characteristics of life: maintenance of homeostasis
It will collect the excess water and store it in a contractile vacuole which will expel the water
Paramecium characteristics of life:reproduce
- The cell is able to duplicate
2. The nucleus of the cell divides via mitosis
