CELLS BIOLOGY Flashcards
What is mitochondria ?
organelles that contain the enzymes for respiration, and is where most energy is released in respiration.
What is the function of the nucleus ?
contains genetic information that controls the functions of the cell
What does cell wall do ?
strengthens and supports the cell
What’s ribo-somes ?
the site of protein synthesis - makes protein
What are chloroplasts ?
organelles that contains green pigment, chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
What’s the point of a vacuole ?
used to store water and other chemicals as cell sap
What is the role of cytoplasm ?
where many chemical reactions happen
What does cell membrane do ?
controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is diffusion ?
movement of particles from an area of a high concentration to an area of a low concentration down a concentration gradient
What is osmosis ?
the diffusion of water molecules from a high to a low concentration across a semi permeable membrane
What is active transport ?
the movement of substances from a low to a high concentration against the concentration gradient
Why is glucose important for cells ?
needed
needed for respiration
What do plants need for a healthy growth ?
mineral ions
