cells and tissues Flashcards
What is a nucleus?
Contains genetic material that controls cell’s activity
What is cytoplasm?
Jelly-like liquid inside the cell where many chemical reactions take place
What does the cell membrane do?
Outer surface of cell, controls what enters and leaves the cell
What are mitochondria?
Found in cytoplasm of animal cells, reactions for respiration take place here
What are ribosomes?
Found in cytoplasm of animal cells, where proteins are made
What are chloroplasts?
Found in plant cells, contain chlorophyll. Where photosynthesis takes place
What is chlorophyll?
Green substance needed for photosynthesis, found in chloroplasts
What is a vacuole?
Found in centre of plant cells, contains cell sap
What is the function of a cellulose cell wall?
Found in plant cells only; keeps cell rigid
What are cone cells?
Receptors in retina of eye, responsible for colour vision
What are root hair cells?
Long cells on plant roots, big surface area to absorb water and minerals using active transport
How are sperm cells adapted for their purpose?
Adapted for reproduction; long tail and streamlined head help them swim
How are red blood cells adapted for their purpose?
Adapted to carry oxygen; concave shape so big surface area (no nucleus)
