Cells and respiration Flashcards
What waste products do cells need to get rid of?
Carbon dioxide.
What are organisms made up of?
Tiny building blocks known as cells.
What is the cell membrane?
The thin skin around the cell that holds the cell together and also controls what goes in and out of it.
What do you do when you need to see the slide with greater magnification?
You switch to a higher powered objective lens.
What does a group of different tissues come together to make?
An organ.
What is respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose.
Where should you place the microscope and why?
Place it near a window or a lamp so the light shines through the hole in the stage.
Give one physical adaptation of an Amoeba.
They have a contractile vacuole to collect excess water and squeeze it out at the cell membrane.
What is a multicellular organism?
Organisms composed of many cells.
Give one physical adaptation of a Euglena.
They have a tail like structure called flagellum that can help them swim.
How should you angle the mirror?
Angle the mirror so the light shines up through the hole in the stage.
Once you have clipped a side onto the stage, what should the slide have?
The objects you want to look at (stuck to it).
What is the difference between anaerobic respiration and aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration occurs with oxygen and releases more energy slowly but anaerobic respiration occurs without oxygen and releases less energy but quickly.
What do cells need to survive?
Glucose, water, oxygen and amino acids.
What does the nucleus do?
This controls the activities of the cell.
What does anaerobic respiration produce in microorganisms?
Carbon dioxide and ethanol.
Give two examples of unicellular organisms.
Euglena and Amoeba.
Put organ systems, organs, cells, tissues and organisms in order of size.
Cells –> tissues –> organs –> organ systems –> organisms –>
