Cells and organelles Flashcards
What is the function of the organelle cytoskeleton
Provides structural support of the cell
What influence does the organelle cytoskeleton have on the cell
Because it provides the cell with structural support it influences:
1. The strength
2. The shape
3. The flexibility
4. The movement of the cell
What is the organelle cytoskeleton made up of
It is made up of various proteins such as actin and tubulin.
Make an example of cells that have extracellular structures built around the core of cytoskeleton
Flagellum and Cilia
What are ribosomes
They are small organelles mase up of large and small subunits which come together for protein synthesis.
What is the role of ribosomes
They translate mRNA into proteins.
Where are ribosomes located in a cell
- They float freely in the cytoplasm and synthesis protein for the cytosol. Called free ribosomes.
- They can be attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum and products are secreted outside the cell.
What is the role of the endoplasmic reticulum
(a) synthesise and store proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, and transport molecules within its enclosure
(b) detoxification of dangerous material
what is endoplasmic reticulum made of
Made up of series of tubes and chambers (cistarnae) and connected to the mebrane that surrounds the nucleus (nuclear envelope)
What are the two types of endoplasmic reticulum
Rough and Smooth.
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum
I. receives newly manufactured proteins from ribosomes
II. modifies proteins into glycoproteins
III. Packages proteins and glycoproteins into vesicles to be sent to the Golgi apparatus
