Cells and microscopy Flashcards
What is an organelle?
Very small structures inside of cells
What organelles are found in plant cells, but not animal cells?
Chloroplasts, cell wall and permanent vacuole
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Control what can enter and leave the cell
What is the function of the cell wall?
Support the plant cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Where most of the chemical reactions occur
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the cell and holds the DNA
What is the function of the permanent vacuole?
Contains cell sap
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Where photosynthesis occurs
What is the function of mitochondria?
Where aerobic respiration occurs
What is the function of ribosomes?
Where protein synthesis occurs
What are the two types of microscope?
Light and electron
Which type of microscope has the highest magnification and resolution?
Electron microscopes have the highest magnification and resolution
What does resolution mean?
The ability to distinguish between two points on an object
What does magnification mean?
Making an object appear larger than its actual size
How can you calculate magnification?
Magnification = size of image / size of real object
What is the difference between a prokaryotic and a eukaryotic organism?
Prokaryotic organisms do not have a nucleus; their DNA lies free in the cytoplasm or in rings of DNA called plasmids. Eukaryotic organisms have their DNA in a nucleus.
Prokaryotic organisms include bacteria, and eukaryotic organisms include plant, animal, fungal and protist cells.
