Cells and Control Flashcards
What are the stages of mitosis?
interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase
What happens interphase?
the cell copies its DNA in preparation for mitosis
what happens in prophase?
the condensation of the chromatin and the disappearance of the nucleolus
what happens in metaphase?
the process that separates duplicated genetic material carried in the nucleus of a parent cell into two identical daughter cells
what happens in anaphase?
the chromosomes are segregated to opposite poles of the cell
what happens in telophase?
a new nuclear membrane is formed, the unfolding of the chromosomes into chromatins, the cell nucleoli reappears and the cell starts to enlarge, again.
What does mitosis produce?
two identical daughter cells
Where does mitosis happen?
`eukaryotic cells
What is cancer caused by?
uncontrolled cell division that can lead to the development of a tumour
How do humans grow?
when cartilage cells increase in number in these growth plates
How do plants grow?
Cell division
What is a percentile chart used for?
to decide whether the size of a child falls within the normal (average) range
What is a stem cell?
an undifferentiated cell that can divide to produce some offspring cells that continue as stem cells and some cells that are destined to differentiate
What are the two types of stem cells?
Adult, Embryonic
What is a receptor?
an organ or cell able to respond to light, heat, or other external stimulus and transmit a signal to a sensory nerve.
