Cells and control Flashcards
What’s interphase
The initial growth phase in which there are extra ribosomes, mitochondria and other sub-cellar structures are produced.
What happens in interphase
The cells chromosomes are replicated so there are two sets in the cells chromosomes.
What’s mitosis
When the two sets of chromosomes are pulled to opposite ends of the cell. The nucleus then divides into two.
What’s cytokinesis?
When the cytoplasm and cell membranes divide to make two identical diploid cells.
How are chromosomes arranged in prophase
Tightly coiled (they are condensed)
How are chromosomes arranged in Metaphase
Lined up along the middle of the cell
How are chromosomes arranged in Anaphase
pulled to opposite ends of the cell
What happens in telophase
The nucleus splits so two new nuclei are formed
What is cancer
a group of diseases where changes in cells lead to uncontrolled growth and division of cells.
What is a malignant tumor?
A harmful tumor that can invade neighboring tissues and spread throughout the body and into the blood, leading to the creation of more, secondary, tumors.
What are benign tumors?
They stay in a specific part of the body, often within a membrane
What’s the zone of cell division
The zone is near the tip of a root and then cells divide by mitosis so new cells are created
What is the zone of elongation
further yup the root and next to the zone of division, the new cells grow in size here
What’s the zone of differentiation
even further up the root, next to the zone of elongation. this is where the new cells differentiate.
If a baby is in the 95th percentile of weight, how many babies of the same age are the same weight or heavier?
5%
