Q

What is the purpose of a cell membrane?

A

Cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell and is found in both animal and plant cells.

Q

What is a cytoplasm?

A

Cytoplasm fills the cell, it is the site of the cell’s reaction and is found both in plants & animals cells.

Q

What is a nucleus?

A

A nucleus controls the cell’s functions, it contains the hereditary material (DNA) and is found in both animal and plant cells.

Q

What are sperm cells and what are their features?

A

Sperm cells are male sex cells carrying the DNA of one parent. The head contains genetic information and an enzyme to help penetrate the egg cell membrane. The middle section is packed with mitochondria for energy. The tail moves the sperm to the egg.

Q

What are red blood cells and what are their features?

A

Red blood cells are tiny disc shaped cells without a nucleus which contains haemoglobin. The thin outer membrane lets the oxygen diffuse through easily while the shape increases the surface area to allow more oxygen to be absorbed efficiently.

16
Q

What is cell division? and how is the DNA involved in he same?

A

Making new cells is called Cell division. A copy of the DNA is made before the cell divides, so each new cell is identical to the original cell.

17
Q

What is the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?

A

Vertebrates are animals with backbones while invertebrates are animals without backbones.

18
Q

State all 7 characteristics of living things?

A

movement, respiration, sensitivity, nutrition (feeding), excretion, reproduction and growth

19
Q

When does movement happen?

A

Movement maybe in response to stimulus.

20
Q

Define respiration?

A

Respiration is the release of energy from the breakdown of glucose.

21
Q

Define sensitivity?

A

Sensitivity is a response to the organism’s environment.

22
Q

Define nutrition?

A

It is a way in which living organisms obtain their food.

23
Q

Define excretion?

A

It is the removal of waste produced by an organism’s chemical reaction.

24
Q

Define reproduction?

A

It is the production of new plants & animals

25
Q

Define growth?

A

It is the development of organisms, making them bigger and heavier.

26
Q

Classify Vertebrates?

A

They are mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.

27
Q

What are mammals?

A

Mammals are creatures whose bodies have hair, the young develop inside the mother are are fed on milk after birth, live on land, in water and in the air, wal, swim or fly.

28
Q

What are the characteristics of Birds?

A

Birds are creatures whose bodies are covered in feathers , have wings, live on land and in air and lay hard shelled eggs.

29
Q

What are the characteristics of Fish?

A

Fish are creatures whose bodies are covered in scales, live in water, swim, lay eggs in water and have gills to breathe.

30
Q

What are the characteristics of Reptiles?

A

Reptiles are creatures that have a dry waterproof skin with scales, mostly live on land, some can swim, some have legs, some slide along the ground and lay soft shelled eggs on land.

31
Q

What are the characteristics of Amphibians?

A

Amphibians are creatures whose bodies are slimy, live on land or land and in water. They lay eggs in water and can swim, walk or hop.

32
Q

What is classification?

A

Classification is a way that living things are divided into groups with similar features.
