Cells and Classification - YEAR 7 Flashcards
What are all living things made of?
Cells - Unicellular or multicellular.
Why and how do cells respire?
Cells respire to release energy from sugars. The carbon dioxide produced is a waste product.
How do you test for the presence of Carbon dioxide?
Pass through limwater
Who was Robert Hooke and what is his contribution in the field of Biology?
Robert Hooke was one of the first men to build and make a microscope which he used to look at cells.
What is the purpose of a cell membrane?
Cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell and is found in both animal and plant cells.
What is a cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm fills the cell, it is the site of the cell’s reaction and is found both in plants & animals cells.
What is a nucleus?
A nucleus controls the cell’s functions, it contains the hereditary material (DNA) and is found in both animal and plant cells.
What are chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll to trap light for photosynthesis ( food production ) and are found in the green parts of plants.
What is a vacuole?
Vacoule is a bag of salty, sugary water (cell sap) which helps support plant cells.
What are sperm cells and what are their features?
Sperm cells are male sex cells carrying the DNA of one parent. The head contains genetic information and an enzyme to help penetrate the egg cell membrane. The middle section is packed with mitochondria for energy. The tail moves the sperm to the egg.
What are red blood cells and what are their features?
Red blood cells are tiny disc shaped cells without a nucleus which contains haemoglobin. The thin outer membrane lets the oxygen diffuse through easily while the shape increases the surface area to allow more oxygen to be absorbed efficiently.
What are the features of White blood cells?
White Blood cells are cells with a large single or lobed nucleus which fight bacteria, produce antibodies and give immunity to disease.
What are the features of neurones?
Neurones are cells with long extensions called axons which are insulated by a fatty layer and carry electrical impulses.
What are the features of pollen?
Pollen is the male sex cell of flowering plants and transports the hereditary material of the plant.
What are the features of root hair cells?
These are cells with increased surface area for taking in water for the plant.
