Cells Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Consists of specialized bodies called organelles which are suspended in a fluid matrix
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Consists of stacks of flattened sacs involved in the production of various materials
Ribosomes
Carry out the process of producing protein
Nucleus
Contains DNA, the hereditary information of the cell. Bounded by the nuclear membrane
Nucleolus
Primary function is the creation of ribosome. Round structure within the nucleus of a cell
Nuclear Membrane
Double membrane layer that separates the contents of the nucleus from the rest of the cell
Golgi
Function to modify and package proteins and lipids into vesicles
Vesicles
Small, spherically shaped sacs that bud from the end of the Golgi
Mitochondrion
Powerhouse of the cell. Carry out aerobic respiration which is a process in which energy is obtained from carbohydrates
Chloroplast
Found only in algal and plant cells. Used to produce energy through photosynthesis
Flagella
Protrude from the cell membrane and make wave-like movements (ex: Sperm)
________ separates internal metabolic events from the external environment.
Cell membrane, also known as, the plasma membrane
-This layer is semi-permeable – only small, uncharged, polar molecules can pass through (H20 and C02).
___________ provide passageways through the membrane for water-soluble substances.
Channel proteins
___________ initiate specific cell responses once hormones or other trigger molecules bind to them
Receptor Proteins
What do Electron transfer proteins do?
move electrons from one molecule to another
