Cells Flashcards
Cell membrane
Function of cell membrane?
Keeps all the parts of the cell together so that cell can work properly,it forma a boundary that surrounds the cytoplasm
Where is it present, what is it made up of?what does it control?
It is present in both plant and animal cells,it is made up of phospholipid molecules with hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails,it also contains proteins and carbohydrates. It is selectively permeable and controls substances going in and out of the membrane.
What is diffusion and osmosis?
Diffusion is the movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration across a concentration gradient
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration across a concentration gradient
What is the difference between passive transport and active transport?
Active transport is against a concentration gradient and uses energy whereas passive transport is across a concentration gradient
What is cellular respiration?
A chemical process of taking energy from organic compounds for the cell to use
How is wood formed?
When some plants grow bigger and older, the cell walls become thicker and stronger. A substance called lignin is formed in the cytoplasm. This lignin is deposited into the cellulose strands. Lignin does not let water pass through it. When more and more lignin is deposited the cell becomes a waterproof box. No water and nutrients can pass through. The cell contents die and the remaining cell wall helps support the growth of the plant
Wgat are the two types of osmosis and describe them
Endosmosis-when water moves into a cell by osmosis
Exomosis- when water moves out of a cell by osmosis
Two types of proteins found in the cell membrane
Channel proteins and transport proteins
