Cells Flashcards
What is the function of a nucleus?
Contains genetic material.
Controls activities of the cell.
What is the function of cytoplasm?
Most chemical processes take place in here. They are controlled by enzymes.
What is the function of a cell membrane?
Controls movement of substances in and out of the cell.
What is the function of mitochondria?
Release energy by respiration
What is the function of ribosomes?
Protein synthesis happens in the ribosomes.
What is the function of a cell wall?
Strengthen the cell
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light for phototsynthesis
What is the function of a vacuole?
Filled with cell sap to keep the cell turgid.
Which organells are only found in plant cells?
Cell wall
Chloroplasts
Vacuole
What is a eukaryotic cell?
Cells that have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material in a NUCLEUS.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
Cells that have a cell membrane, cell wall (not made of cellulose) and genetic material loose in the cytoplasm.
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells working together to perform a particular function.
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues working together to perform a particular function.
What is an organ system?
A group of different organs working together to perform a particular function.
What is an organism?
A group of different organ systems.
What is the function of the waxy cuticle in a leaf?
To prevent water loss through evaporation.
What is the function of the upper epidermis in a leaf?
It’s thin and transparent to allow more light through to the chloroplasts.
What is the function of the palisade mesophyll in a leaf?
Contains lots of chloroplasts to absorb light for photosynthesis.
What is the function of the spongy mesophyll in a leaf?
Contains lots of air spaces to allow gases to diffuse through the leaf and to increase surface area.
What is the function of the stomata in a leaf?
They are holes in the leaf, to allow carbon dioxide to diffuse in and oxygen to diffuse out.
What is the function of the guard cells in a leaf?
To open and close the holes to prevent water loss.

What’s the function of the skeletal system?
- support
- protect vital organs
What’s the function of the circulatory system?
Responsible for flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen and hormones.
What’s the function of the respiratory system?
Takes in oxygen and exhales carbon dioxide.
What’s the function of the endocrine system?
Produces hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, development and tissue growth (etc.).
What’s the function of the muscular system?
- supports movement
- controls actions (walking, talking, sitting, eating, etc.)
- maintains posture
- circulates blood
What’s the function of the digestive system?
To digest food.
What’s the function of the reproductive system?
To reproduce
What’s the function of the nervous system?
- transmits signals to the brain
- regulates blood pressure
- regulates breathing rate
