Cells Flashcards
Why are cells divided?
To chemically specialize in their particular function.
What are the three domains of life?
Archaea, bacteria, eukarya
What are the four kingdoms of eukarya?
Animalia, plantae, fungi, protist; they are all multicellular.
Cell Membrane
Regulates traffic of molecules between and around the cell
Cell Walls
Provides structure and support for plant cells.
Chloroplasts
Found in plant and seaweed cells; responsible for photosynthesis.
Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell; site of cellular respiration.
Nucleus
Houses genetic information; DNA/RNA
Ribosomes
Builds proteins by decoding information provided by genes.
Cilia
Numerous short extensions that move back and forth to propel cellular movement.
Flagella
Long extensions from cells; move in s whip like motion to propel movement.
How are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells similar?
Bound by membranes
Cytosol
Ribosomes
What are some examples of protists?
Single celled amoebas
Seaweed
How are procaryotic and eukaryotic cells different? Which of the three domains are procaryotic?
Procaryotic cells lack organelles and are single celled; bacteria and archaea.
Major contents of bacterial cells
Ribosomes, nucleoid, plasma membrane.
