Cells Flashcards
Cell
A tiny object that is in any type of living thing
Microsope
A machine for viewing tiny objects
Light microscope
An instrument for viewing very small objects. A light microscope can magnify things up to 1500 times.
Electron microscope
An electron microscope is much more powerful than a light microscope and can magnify things up to a million times.
Monocular
A microscope through which the specimen is seen using one eye only
Binoculars
microscope with two eyepieces, so you use both eyes to look at the object
Stereo
microscope through which the specimen is viewed using both eyes
Magnification
the number of times the image of an object has been enlarged using a lens or lens system. For example, a magnification of two means the object has been enlarged to twice its actual size.
Unicellular
Organism having 1 cell
Multicellular
Having many cells
Micrometer
A Length of one millionth of a metre
Nanotechnology
rapidly developing field that includes studying and investigating cells and other objects of the smallest dimensions
Prokaryotes
organism classified as belonging to the Prokaryotae kingdom
Eukaryotes
Organism that has a membrane around the nucleus in each of their cells
Cell membrane
Structure that encloses the contents of a cell and allows the movement of some materials in and out
Cytosol
The fluid inside a cell
Ribosomes
Small structures within a cell
Cytoplasm
The jelly-like material inside a cell
Metabolism
A reaction that makes an organism repair and grow
Binary fission
Reproduction of an organism into two new organism
Animalia
Animals
Plantae
Plants
Fungi
Mushroom
Protoctista
Algae
Mitochondrial
Supply energy to other cells
Cellular respiration
Oxygen that moves the energy in glucose
Photosynthesis
Cell making their own food
Chlorophyll
Green coloured chemicals in plants that absorbs energy used in photosynthesis to make food
Nucleus
Central part of a cell
Chromosome
Tiny structure inside the nucleus cell
DNA
A variable that is likely to change
Mitosis
Process that results in new cells
Clone
Identical copy
Cytokinesis
Process where the cytoplasm of a cell divides to form two daughter cells
Infectious diseases
Disease that can be transferred
Non infectious diseases
Disease that cannot be transferred
Antibiotics
Substance from a micro organism
Disinfectant
Noemi also used to kill bacteria
Antiseptic
Mild disinfectant used on body tissue
Bactericidal
An antiseptic that kills bacteria
Bacteriostatic
antiseptic that stops bacteria from growing or dividing but doesn’t kill them
Epidemic
Outer layer of the skin
Dermis
Inner layer of the skin
Receptor
Special cells that detect energy
Sweat glands
Water and salt are removed from the body, helping to control body temperature
Pore
Small opening in the skin
Evaporate
Liquid to a gas
