Q

Cell membrane

A

Thin, flexible barrier around a cell, regulates what enters and leaves the cell
It’s found on a plant and animal cell
If the molecule is too large than it can’t go through
Can only go through if it’s small enough

Q

Cell wall

A

Strong supporting layer around the cell membrane in plants, algae, and some bacteria
Found only on plant cells, not animal cells
Made out of cellulose

Q

Chloroplast

A

Organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy
Contains green pigment, chlorophyll
Used to make food during photosynthesis

Q

Cytoplasm

A

Material inside the cell membrane-not including the nucleus
Like gel
Makes up most of the cell

Q

Mitochondria

A

Cell organelle that converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient f the cell to use
Mighto/ lighto
Mighty Mitochondria
Power house of the cell

Nucleus

A

Structure that contains the cell’s genetic material(DNA) and controls the cells activities
“Boss” of the cell

Q

Chromatin/Chromosomes/ DNA

A

(There are differences in these words that we will learn later)- genetic material
Gives the certain code to the messenger RNA to give to the ribosomes to make the proteins

Q

Ribosome

A

Small particle in the cell on which proteins are assembled; made of RNA & protein
Also found on the ER and in the cytoplasm

Q

Cell specialization

A

The process in which cells develop in different ways to perform different tasks
Chemical signals tell each cell which genes to read
Cells - tissues - organs - organ systems - organisms

16
Q

Antigen

A

Protein marker on cell membrane

Induces information of antibodies because it is recognized by the immune system as foreign to the body

17
Q

Diffusion

A

Process by which molecules tend to move from an area of high concentration to an area where they are less concentrated
ATP is not used
It’s a passive transport

18
Q

Osmosis

A

Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane

19
Q

Cellular respiration

A

Energy releasing process
Puts carbon dioxide back and takes oxygen
Happens in the mitochondria
Oxygen+ Glucose-> CO2+ Water

20
Q

Photosynthesis

A

Biochemical food making process
Removes carbon dioxide releases oxygen
Happens in the chloroplasts
Carbon dioxide+ water-> glucose & oxygen
