Cells Flashcards
What’s a vesicle?
A very small vacuole
Whats an electron micrograph?
An image made using an electron microscrope. This uses a beam of electrons instead of light and can magnify thing up to 500 000 times
what’s cellulose?
It belongs to a group of substances called polysaccharides. they form fibres which criss cross over one another to form a very strong covering to the cell. this helps o protect and support the cell
What are starch grains?
Tiny pieces of starch, made of thousands of starch molecules that are stored in some plant cells
How do ribosomes make proteins?
They use the instructions on the DNA molecules to link together long chains of amino acids in a particular sequence
Describe ciliated cells
They line the trachea and bronci of animals. they move mucus upwards
What’s the magnification formula?
Magnification= size of image/ size of actual object
How many micrometers in a meter?
100 000 0
what features are present in all cells
ribosomes / (cell) membrane / 1
cytoplasm ;
State the names of cell structures that are involved in making or secreting proteins.
nucleus ;
ribosomes ;
rough endoplasmic reticulum ;
vesicles ;
mitochondria ;
cell membrane ;
State features of animal cells that are not found in bacteria.
nucleus ;
mitochondria ;
(rough) endoplasmic reticulum
State the features of xylem vessels that enable them to conduct water.
no, cytoplasm / (named 3
organelle) / hollow ;
ref. to lignin (in walls) ;
(cell walls) are waterproof /
water impermeable / AW ;
(secondary) thickening of cell
wall ;
long / elongated (cells / vessels
/ tubes) ;
(bordered) pits (for water
movement between vessels) ;
no, (perforated) end / cross walls
(between cells) / end plates to
connect vessels (end to end) ;
What is a fungis cell wall made of?
chitin
arthropods, molluscs (snails, octopi, shellfish), nematodes (parasitic worms), annelids (earthworms and leeches)
