Cells Flashcards
What is the structure of the nucleolus?
Non-membranous structure involved in production of ribosomes; a nucleus has one or more nucleoli
What is the structure of the Golgi apparatus?
Organelle active in synthesis, modification, sorting and secretion of cell products. Consists of stacks of associated, flattened sacs, or cisternae. They are not physically connected.
What is the structure of a lysosome?
Membranous sac of hydrolysis enzymes that many eukaryotic cells use to digest macromolecules.
What is the structure of a mitochondrion?
It has an outer membrane that encloses the organelle and an inner membrane with infolding called cristae that increase surface area and enhance cellular respiration. Mitochondrial matrix enclosed by inner membrane contains enzymes that catalyze steps of cellular respiration.
What is the function of mitochondrion?
They are sites of cellular respiration, the metabolic process that uses oxygen to drive the generation of ATP by extracting energy from sugars, fats, and other fuels.
What is the structure of plasma membrane?
Phospholipid bilayer with proteins and carbohydrates.
What is the function of the plasma membrane?
The selective barrier that allows passage of enough oxygen, nutrients, and wastes to service the entire cell.
What is the structure of the nucleus?
Made of the nuclear envelope(membrane enclosing the nucleus with nuclear pores), nucleolus (structure involved in the production of ribosomes), and chromatin(material consisting of DNA and proteins)
What is the structure of a ribosome?
Complexes made of ribosomal RNA and protein, are the cellular components that carry out protein synthesis.
What is the structure of the rough ER?
Studded with ribosomes on the outer surface of the membrane, have vesicles. Are near the nuclear envelope.
What is the structure of smooth ER?
Membrane that lacks ribosomes in its outer surface.
What is the structure of vacuoles?
Large vesicles(sacs made of membrane) derived from the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus.
What is the function of the nucleolus?
Producing and assembling ribosomes. Synthesizing rRNA and combines it with proteins to form subunits of ribosomes.
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus?
Modifying, sorting and shipping cellular products. Transports vesicles from the ER to the cis face. Manufactures macromolecules.
What is the function of a lysosome?
Digest food molecules in the cell and release the nutrients from it into the cytosol.
