Cells Flashcards
Cell Theory, different types of Cells, structures and functions of organelles, specialised cells, light microscope and calculating magnification
Define an Organism [1]
An Organism is an individual plant, animal or single-celled life form
define a Membrane [2]
A Membrane controls what substances can enter or leave the cell.
They consist of a phospholipid bilayer together with proteins and other components.
Define Cytoplasm [1]
Cytoplasm is the fluid component of the cell, enclosed by the cell membrane and surrounding the organelles
Define Phospholipid [1]
phospholipid is a large molecule formed from a glycerol molecules covalently bound to 2 fatty acid molecules.
define an Organelle [1]
An Organelle is a specialised structure within plant or animal cells that have a specific function.
define a Phospholipid bilayer [1]
A double layer of phospholipids with the hydrophobic trails arranged towards the middle, it forms the basis of all biological molecules
define a cell-surface membrane [1]
sometimes called ‘Plasma membrane’, it is a membrane that surrounds all types of cells.
define Pathogen [1]
A microorganism that causes illness or disease by damaging host tissues and/or by producing toxins
define Stem Cells [1]
undifferentiated (non-specialised) cells that can give rise to one or more types of differentiated (specialised) cell
