Cells! Flashcards
What’s an example of an organelle?
Nucleus, vacuole, mitochondria, and ribosomes
What is an organelle?
It’s a specialized structure the performs important cellular functions without a eukaryotic cell.
What’s the cell membrane?
It’s a thin, flexible barrier around a cell
What does the cell membrane do?
It regulates what enters & leaves the cell
What has a cell wall?
A plant cell
What is the cell wall for?
It gives support and protection to the cell
What cell has Chloroplast?
Plant cells
What does chloroplast do?
Use to make C6H12O6
Chlorophyll is where?
In the chloroplast
What does the chlorophyll do?
Capture energy from the sun to do photosynthesis
What is cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm holds the organelles in the cell
What does cytoplasm can be exampled by
Jello with fruit chunks in it
Mitochondria does what?
It takes chemical energy and turns it into stored food for the cell to use
What does the Mitochondria look like?
Squiggles and a peanut
What does the Nucleus hold?
It holds your DNA
What does the nucleus do?
It controls the cell
What is DNA?
It’s your genetic material
What holds your DNA?
The nucleus
What does a Ribosome do?
It makes proteins
What are Ribosomes made up of?
RNA & proteins
What does a Vacuole do?
It stores
What does a vacuole store?
Water, food, waste
What is a eukaryotic cell?
More advanced type of cell
What does a Eukaryotic cell have?
It has a nucleus
What’s a prokaryotic cell?
An ancient type of cell
What is different about a prokaryotic cell than an Eukaryotic cell?
A prokaryotic cell does NOT have a nucleus
What is the word for this definition- the process in which cells develop in different ways to perform different tasks
Cell specialization (differentiation)
What’s an example of cell specialization?
A heart cell helps to make a heart which is in the circulatory system while a lung cell helps make a lung.
