Cells Flashcards
What is a cell
A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life for all living things. It can only be seen through a microscope.
What is the membrane?
Surrounds the cell; controls what enters and leaves the cell; thin living and pliable
What is the cytoplasm?
Is a liquid in which metabolism takes place in the cell
What is the nucleus?
Surrounded by nuclear membrane. Contains the DNA which carries the generic code and hereditary characteristics. The nucleus controls the functions and processes of the cell.
What are the organelles?
- Mitochondria
- Vacuoles
- Chloroplast
What are the differences between plant and animal cells?
Cell wall - present in p.c, not a.c
Shape - p.c has a fixed shape, a.c has no fixed shape
Vacuole - p.c has a large vacuole, a.c has a small or no vacuole.
Only the p.c has chloroplasts
Function of the cell wall
Gives the shape of the cell and provides protection
Function of the cell membrane
Control what enters and leaves the cell
Function of the vacuole
Used as a storage for water, nutrients and some waste products. Also give shape.
Function of the chlorplast
Contains chlorophyll, allowing photosynthesis
Function of the mitochondria
Responsible for respiration (powerhouse)
Function of the nucleus
Controls all cell activitiy
Function of nucleus
Controls all cell activity
