Cells Flashcards
What are all living things made off?
Cells.
Cells can be either prokaryotic and eukariotic. What are eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animals and plant cells.
Cells can be either prokaryotic and eukariotic. What are prokaryotic cells? Give an example.
Prokaryotic cells are simpler, e.g. bacteria.
What are eukaryotes?
Eukaryotes are organisms made up off eukaryotic cells.
What is a prokaryote?
An organism that lacks a distinct nucleus and other organelles due to the absence of internal membranes. It is a prokaryotic cell (a single-celled organism).
What is the nucleus?
It is where the genetic material is contained, it controls the activities of the cell.
What is a cytoplasm?
It is a gel-like substace where most of the chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions.
What is the cell membrane?
It is what holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
What is the mitochondria?
They are where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work.
What are the ribosomes?
They are where proteins are made in the cell.
What is the rigid cell wall made off and what does it does?
It is made of cellulose. It supports the cell and strengthens it.
What is the permanent vacuole?
It is a cell that contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugar and salts.
What are the chloroplasts?
The chloroplasts is where the photosynthesis occurs, which make food for the plants. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll, which absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
What is the chlorophyll?
It absorbs the light needed for photosynthesis.
