Cells Flashcards

1
Q

Cell membrane

A
  • Provides a boundary between living cells and external world
  • Hydrophobic layer prevents polar and large molecules passing, highly hydrophobic molecules will enter and not leave
  • Breaking the barrier can be done by adding molecules which tunnel and/or disrupt the membrane - can make them leaky or create a channel to pass things through the membrane

Q

Endoplasmic reticulum (rough and smooth)

A
  • Rough - covered in ribosomes, produces proteins
  • Smooth - more involved in lipid biosynethesis

Q

Golgi apparatus

A
  • Lipid and membrane proteins can be transported by vesicles from the ER to be processed more and packaged off

Q

Ribosomes

A
  • Produces proteins by translating mRNA into polypeptides via tRNAs
  • Found in the cytoplasm, mitochondria and rough ER

Q

Endosomes and lysosomes

A
  • Endosomes are membrane enclosed compartments that do transporting, they become acidic and turn into lysosomes
  • Lysosomes break down contents
