Cells Flashcards
Nerve Tissues
extends through the body to carry messages to and from the brain
Connective Tissues
fat, cartilage, bone, blood vessels, and scar tissues
A fibrous tissue with several functions, connects or supports other body structures
Muscle Tissues
- Voluntary/Striated Muscle Tissue: controlled by conscious efforts; striated means streaked or scratched, which indicates the appearance of voluntary muscles
- Involuntary/Smooth Muscles: Works without conscious efforts, controlled by the nervous system and keeps automatic systems moving
Epithelial Tissues
-Covers organs, lines body cavities and forms portions of some ducts and glands
-Protects the body and absorbs, secretes, and excretes substances
-skin is formed from epithelial cells
Tissue Fluid
a saltwater solution that bathes every cell in the body
Organelles
a general term for Structures with cytoplasm; they are surrounded by a membrane and has a specific function
ex: Nucleus, Mitochondria
Karyoplasm
The substance of the nucleus
Cytoplasm
a substance between the plasma membrane and nucleus of all cells
Chromosomes
Short, tightly coiled rods that contain genes; found in the nucleus of the cell
Catabolism
the breaking down metabolic phase; produces energy from food and oxygen
Anabolism
The building metabolic phase; grows, maintains and repairs body structures
Ribosomes
makes proteins, bind messenger RNA and transfer RNA to synthesize polypeptides and proteins
Mitochondria
burns food in the presence of oxygen to make cell energy
Lysosomes
the cells “digestive system”
Flagella
a sperm cell’s tail, enables ability to swim
