Cells Flashcards
The 3 main parts of all human cells
Cytoplasmic membrane (plasma membrane), cytoplasm, and nucleus
Encloses the cytoplasm and forms the outer boundary of the cell
Cytoplasmic membrane
Forms a fluid framework for the cytoplasmic membrane
Phospholipids (phosphate containing fat molecules)
Outside of cells
Extracellular
Between cells
Intercellular
Substances inside the cytoplasmic membrane
Intracellular
Functions of the cytoplasmic membrane
To enclose and support the cell contents / regulate what moves in and out of the cell
Central layer of the cytoplasmic membrane
Lipid bilayer
Lipid bilayer
Layer composed of a double layer of lipid molecules
Protein molecules function as
Membrane channels, carrier molecules, receptor molecules, enzymes, or structural support in the membrane
Cytoplasm lies between
Between the cytoplasmic membrane and the nucleus
A round or spherical structure in the center of cell
Nucleus
Special structure in the cytoplasm that performs important functions to cells survival
Organelles
Endoplasmic reticulum is
A chain of connecting sacs or canals that winds thru the cytoplasm of the cell
Serves as a tiny circulatory system for the cell
Endoplasmic reticulum
Two types of endoplasmic reticulum
Smooth and rough
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is found
In cells that handle or produce fatty substances
Rough endoplasmic reticulum is found
In cells that produce proteins to be secreted for use outside the cell
