Cells Flashcards
What does an animal cell have in it?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria.
What does a palisade / plant cell have in it?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, cell wall, vacuole, chloroplasts.
What does nucleus do?
Controls what the cell does and contains DNA.
What is the cytoplasm?
A jelly-like part of the cell where most chemical reactions happen.
What is the cell membrane?
A thin skin around the cell that holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out.
What is the mitochondria?
Tiny structures where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place, so it releases energy for the cell. There are lots of it in the average cell.
What is the cell wall?
It’s a rigid outer coating made out of cellulose and supports and keeps the cell in place.
What is the vacuole?
A weak solution of sugar and salts filled with cell sap and is found in the middle of the palisade cell.
What are chloroplasts?
A part of the cell that contains chlorophyll and is used for photosynthesis, which makes food for the plant.
What cells does a plant have?
Palisade cell and root hair cell.
What cells does an animal have?
Red blood cell, nerve cell, sperm, egg cell and ciliated cell.
Define sperm cell.
Sperm cell is use in reproduction and carries DNA to fertilize the female egg. Its head contains enzymes, which it used to penetrate the egg and it has a long tail to swim.
Define red blood cell.
Red blood cell carries oxygen around the body and doesn’t have a nucleus to make space for more oxygen.
Define nerve cell.
Nerve cells are long and carry electrical signals. They have lots of connections.
Define egg cell.
Contains yolk that acts like a food source for the embryo developing and much larger than animal cells.
