Cells Flashcards
Tissue
is a group of cells with similar structures, working together to perform a shared function
Organ
is a structure made up of a group of tissues, working together to perform a specific function
System
is a group of organs with related functions working together to perform a body function
Specialised cells
Cells that have finished growing and dividing and perform one particular job, develop a different shape, and special types of chemical reactions take place in their cytoplasm
Cells epithilium
Look like several omlets
Small tube made out of cells
Look like abs, seriously though
A type of muscle cells
Look like pasta
Cells forming a part of a gland
Look like avocados
Organ Systems
An organ system usually refers to a group of organs whose functions are closely related
Organism
An organism is formed by the organs and organ systems working together to produce and independent plant or animal

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Vertebrates
Mammals, Fish, Amphibians, Birds, Reptiles
Invertebrates
Cristaticus, Myriapods, Insects, Spiders
Plants
Conifers, mosses, Mosses/Lichens, Flowering plants
Flowering plants
Dicotyledons, Monocots
Dicotyledons
Trees, Shrubs, Roses
Monocots
Oat, Burly, Grasses
White blood cells
Part of the body’s immune system. Destroy Pathogens. Some produce antibodies
Red blood cells
Carry oxygen. Contain haemoglobin.
Sperm Cells
Fertilise egg cells. Contain a lot of mitochondria. Contains enzymes.
Nerve Cells
Transmits electrical signals.
Goblet cells
Found in respiratory tracts. Secrete mucus to lubricate and protect.
Human and animals cells
Goblet, Nerve, White blood, Red blood and sperm cells.
Muscle cells
Make up skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle fibres. Contain protein fibres. Store glucose and fat.
Plant cells
Root hair cells, Leaf cells, Palisade cells, Sive cells, Epidermal cells
Root hair cells
Absorb water and minerals.
Sive cells
Transport carbo hydrates. As they mature, they only keep their cytoplasm.
Palisade cells
Main site of photosynthesis. Contain many chloroplasts.
Epidermal cells
Very thin to let sunlight pass through. Have no chloroplasts. Protected by a protective waxy cuticle.
Systems
Digestive, Respiratory, Circulatory, Excretory, Sensory, Nervous, Muscle-skeletal, Reproductive
Tissues
Epithelial, Connective, Skeletal, Blood, Nerve, Muscle, Epidermal, Photosynthetic, Vascular, Strengthening
Connective tissue
To bind and connect tissues together
Skeletal tissue
To support and protect the body and permit movement
Blood tissue
To carry oxygen and food round the body
Nerve tissue
To conduct and coordinate messages
Muscle tissue
To bring about movement
Epidermal tissue
To line and protect the surface of the plant
Photosynthetic tissue
To feed the plant by photosynthesis
Vascular tissue
To transport water and food substances
Strengthening
To support and strengthen the plant
Ferns
Roots, stems and leaves. Reproduces by tiny spores.
Flowered plants
Pistil (female reproductive system), Stamen (Male reproductive system), Have coloured petals to attract insects.
Monocots
Seeds with a single cotyledon, an adventitious root system, parallel-veined leaves
Dicotyledons
Roots develop from radicle, flower parts in multiples of four or five, Major leaf veins reticulated
Spiders
Eight legs, simple eyes, two body-parts
Insects
Antennas, External skeleton, Segmented body
Verterbrates
Back-bone, Skull, endoskeleton
Invertebrates
No back-bone, hard outer skeleton, soft-bodied
Birds
Wings but not all can fly, beaks, lay hard-shelled eggs, scales on legs
Reptiles
Cold-blooded, dry scaly skin, reproduce mostly in eggs
Mammals
Warm-blooded, Fur/hair, Feed milk to their new-borns
Bacteria
Single-celled, no nucleus, microscopic size
Viruses
Non living structure, cannot multiply on their own, can infect others
Crustaceans
Antennas, compound eyes, breathe through gills
Fish
Breathe through gills, have fins,
Fungi
Reproduce by means of spores, lack chlorophyll, cells have cell walls
Myriapods
Antennas, segmented body, more than four pairs of legs for crawling
