cells Flashcards
Cell membrane
A flexible phospholipid bilayer that controls the entry and exit of substances and encloses the cell;
cytoplasm
cytosol
the cytoplasm is a fluid containing all cell contents, including organelles
a fluid element of the cytoplasm
endoplasmic reticulum and ( smooth ER, Rough ER)
network of channels that extends everywhere in the cytoplasm (transports materials such as proteins)
Smooth ER: does not have ribosomes attached (production of membrane phospholipids)
Rough ER: Which does have ribosomes and is therefore a site of protein synthesis.
Golgi apparatus
structure of flattened sacs which, collect, package, modify and distribute materials such as proteins.
. modifies products of the ER
. manufactures certain macromolecules
. sorts and packages into transport vesticles
lysosome
sac of enzyme that can digest foreign substances. (lipids, carbs, proteins).
Mitochondria
Site of aerobic cellular respiration and generates ATP.
Nucleus
contains cell DNA
- pores in membrane for communication with other cells
- contains a nucleuos which is involved in ribosome production
- contains Chromatin
Ribosome
carries out protein synthesis in 2 locations
- cytosol
- outside of the rough ER
centrosome and centrioles
both play a major role in cell division.
chloroplast
the site of photosynthesis in plant cells
cell wall
structure made of tough cellulose fibres which protects the plant cell and maintains shape
large vacuole
stores water, nutrients, metabolic wastes and toxins ready for removal, and protects the rest of the plant cell.
