cells Flashcards
nucleus
Both plant and animal cells have a nucleus
The nucleus controls the cell’s activities
It controls which activities happen, when and for how long
The nucleus can do this because it contains a set of instructions called genes
Cytoplasm
Both plant and animal cells have cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that fills the cell
The cytoplasm has many useful substances dissolved in it
It is also the site of many chemical reactions in the cell
cell membrane
Both plant and animal cells have a cell membrane surrounding them
The cell membrane acts as a barrier
It controls what substances enter or leave the cell
Vacuole
Only plant cells have a large permanent vacuole, animal cells have small temporary vacuoles
Vacuoles are bubbles of liquid which contain/store useful materials such as sugars and minerals
When the plant takes in water, the vacuole swells, this makes the plant cell firm, when all the cells in the plant are like this, the plant is able to stand upright.
Why is this an advantage to the plant?
If the plant is upright, the leaves can get light energy from the sun
cell wall
Only plant cells have a cell wall
A cell wall is a layer outside the cell membrane
It is made of a tough substance called cellulose
It protects the cell and gives it shape
chloroplast
Only plant cells have chloroplasts
Chloroplasts are found in the cytoplasm of the cell
They give plants their green colour
Chloroplasts use light energy to make sugars / plant food
