Cells Flashcards
Tonicity
The ability of a solution to change shape of the cells by altering their internal volume.
Hypertonic solution
A solution is higher solute than inside the cells
Water moves out of the cells
Hypotonic solution
A solution with lower than inside the cells
water moves into the cells
Passive Transport
Transport across membrane that does not require ATP
High to low concentration
Facilitated Diffusion
High to low transport assisted by channel transport protein
Active Transport
Moving from low to high concentration
Requires ATP
Selective Permeability
allows passage of
some substances; limits others
Intersitial Fluid
Contains thousands of substances such as amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, horomones, salts, wastes
Tight Junction
Water tight seal that holds cells together
Desmosones
Anchoring joints between cells.
Gap Junction
Allows cells to commnicate through plasma membrane channels.
Structures of the Cell
Rough ER
Smooth ER
Produces proteins
vs
Produces everything else
Golgi Apparatus
The protein traffic director
Produces lysosomes and secretory vesicles/granules
Peroxisomes
Detoxify alcohols and carry out oxidation-reduction reaction.
