Cell Transportation Flashcards
What does a semi-permeable cell membrane mean?
Semi-permeable means that only some molecules can diffuse across the lipid bilayer but other cannot.
The membrane only allows certain materials to pass through
What are the five factors that determine if a molecule can enter a cell?
1) Solubility
2) Charge
3) Polarity
4) Size
5) Concentration
How does size and polarity affect the permeability of a cell?
The lipid bilayer has a largely non-polar interior therefore, non-polar molecules are more permeable than polar molecules.
What are the three sections of a cell?
1) Extracellular space— space outside of the cell that is occupied by fluids/liquids.
2) Cell membrane— separates the inner cell from the outer environment
3) Intracellular space— the space inside of a cell
