Cell Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the random movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached.
How are diffusion and osmosis related to each other?
Both are passive and involve the movement of molecules from high to low concentrations.
Osmosis applies to only water molecules and occurs across a membrane.
That term described the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membranes?
Osmosis
What are the two components of a solution?
A solution is made a solute dissolved in a solvent.
If a solution surround a cell has the same solute concentration as the cell is referred to as:
Isotonic
If a fresh water algae cell is placed in salt water, what term would be used to describe the solution surround the cell?
Hypertonic
What effect does a hypertonic solution have on a cell?
There is a net movement of molecules out of the cell. The cell dehydrates.
What effect does a hypotonic solution have on a cell?
The is a net movement of water into the cell. Pressure increases inside the cell.
What is facilitated diffusion?
Facilitated diffusion is the passive movement of molecules with the aid of protein channels in the cell membrane. Molecules from high to low concentrations.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of molecules into and out of the cell with the use of cellular energy. Molecules move from low to high concentrations.
What is passive transport?
Passive transport is movement in and out of the cell without the use of energy.
