Cell Transport Flashcards
What is osmosis?
The movement of water particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a partially permeable membrane
What is active transport?
The movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration
What does active transport require?
Energy
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What is the concentration gradient?
The difference in concentration of particles between two areas
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A membrane that is permeable to some molecules
What does it mean if something is permeable?
It lets molecules pass through
What is surface area?
The area of an object exposed to the ‘outside’ or the outermost part
What are cells?
The smallest functional unit of an organism
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells working together to perform one or more function.
What is an organ?
A collection of tissues that structurally form a functional unit specialised to form a particular function
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that work together as a biological system to perform one or more function
Name four parts of the exchange surface on villi.
Thin walls (one cell thick); large surface area due to folding; network of capillaries; blood vessels
Name two parts of the exchange surface of alveoli.
Red blood cells in capillary; alveoli
Name three substances that go into the exchange surface of alveoli.
Deoxygenated blood, oxygen and air
Name three substances that go out of the exchange surface of alveoli.
Carbon dioxide, air and oxygenated blood
