Cell Theory Flashcards
What is the “Modern theory of Cellular Organisation”?
- Living thing = - cells
- cell products - Division of pre existing cells = new cells
- Cells = Genes - growth + functioning + developments
- Metabolic reactions occur in cells
What is meant by the term “Abiogenesis”?
The original evolution of life or living organisms from inorganic or inanimate substances.
What are “Eukaryotic Cells”?
- Make up of multi cellular organisms
- Only in plant and animal cells
- These cells have a nucleus
- They have membrane bound organelles
What are “Prokaryotic Cells”?
- Make up of single celled organelles
- Only found in bacteria
- These cells do not have a nucleus
- They don’t have membrane bound organelles
What is meant by the term “Magnification”?
The number of times an image has been enlarged compared to its actual size.
What is meant by the term “Resolution”?
The ability to distinguish between objects that are close together.
When was the first cell described and by Who?
In 1665
By Robert Hooke
After developing powerful glass lenses, who observed bacteria and protoctista?
In what year?
What samples where used?
It was observed by Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Between the years 1674 - 1683
It was pond water samples that were used
Who observed the nucleus first and in What year?
It was discovered by Robert Brown
In 1831
1839
what did Matthias Schleiden Suggest?
He suggested that all plant material is composed of cells.
What did Jan Purkyne observe?
She observed that animal tissues is composed of cells and the structure is similar to plant cells.
What scientist was credited for the “Universal Cell Theory”?
What did he propose?
It was Theodor Shwann
He proposed that all living things are composed of cells.
in 1855, what did Rudolf Virchow publish?
He had published Robert Remak’s observation on cell division in animal cells ( Robert did not publish it as it was not accepted in his time ), using it to show that new cells form from existing ones.
What did Louis Pasteur demonstrate in 1860?
What theory did this disapprove?
He demonstrated that bacteria will only grow in sterile nutrient broth after it has been exposed to air.
This disprove the “Theory of Spontaneous Generation in Cells”.
