CELL THEORY Flashcards
This is a fundamental scientific theory in biology that provides a general understanding of life on
Earth and its characteristics
CELL THEORY
The discovery of the cells by Robert Hooke led other biologists to propose the tenets of Cell Theory.
The first three tenets, called Classical Cell Theory, were proposed by Theodor Schwann, Matthias
Schleiden, and Rudolf Virchow. The discovery of DNA prompted the addition of the next three tenets,
called the Modern Cell Theory.
CELL THEORY
All organisms are made up of cells.
Classical Cell Theory
Cells are the basic units of life.
Classical Cell Theory
All cells come from preexisting cells. “Omnis cellula e cellula”
Classical Cell Theory
Genetic information is passed through DNA or RNA during cell division
Modern Cell Theory
Cells of all organisms within a similar species are mostly the same, both structurally and chemically.
* Energy flow occurs within cells.
Modern Cell theory
Energy flow occurs within cells.
