Cell Theory Flashcards
Cell Theory
- Cell/s or cell products make up all living things
- Cells are the smallest unit of life
- Cells only come from pre-existing cells
When and Who invented first compound microscope
Zacharias Janssen in 1590
When and who and how were named cells
Robert Hooke in 1665 because he looked at a cork plant under a compound microscope and they looked like the rooms monks lived in
When and which scientists created statements #1 and 2 of cell theory
Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann “ in 1838-39
When was and who invented statement #3 of cell theory
Rudolph Virchow in 1855
What caveats cell theory statement #2
Straited muscle fibers, Aseptate fungal hyphae, and Giant Algae
How does Striated muscle fibers caveat cell theory
Muscle cells fuse to form fibers that may be very long (>300mm), which means they will have multiple nuclei in one, continuous plasma membrane, which challenges the idea that cells always function as autonomous units
How does Aseptate Fungal Hyphae caveat cell theory
- Fungi may have filamentous structures called hyphae, which are separated into cells by internal walls called septa
- Some fungi are not partitioned by septa, and hence have a continuous cytoplasm along the length of the hyphae which challenges the idea that living structures are composed of discrete cells
How does Giant Algae caveat cell theory
- Certain species of unicellular algae may grow to very large sizes (e.g. Acetabularia may exceed 7 cm in length)
Ergo, challenges the idea that larger organisms are always made of many microscopic cells
