8 characteristics of living things

A
  1. Growth- puddle, animal
  2. Lifespan- car’s battery, flowers
  3. Excrete- garbage truck, maple tree
  4. Requires energy- iPod battery, caterpillar
  5. Repairs itself- Ironman, wolf

Q

3 parts of cell theory

A
  1. Cells are the basic unit of life
  2. All organisms are made up of one or more cells
  3. All cells come from pre-existing cells

Q

What is cellular differentiation?

A

The process by which a cell becomes specialized to perform a specific function. Cells look different according to the environment the organism is in.

Q

5 Organ systems and their functions

A

Circulatory- transports nutrients, dissolved gases to and from individual cells

Respiratory- exchanges O2 and CO2 between blood and external environment

Digestive- breaks down food into nutrients

Musculoskeletal- structural support to body. Protects inside parts from outside. Movement and locomotion

Nervous- responds to changes in the internal/external environment. Coordinates functions of all other systems

Q

What organelle would be the biggest in a cactus cell?

A

The vacuole, because it has to store lots of nutrients to survive. Cells look different according to the environment the organism is in
