Cell structures-Eukaryotic animal cells Flashcards
where is the nucleolus located?
In the nucleus
Function of nucleolus
Where ribosomes are made
What is the nucleus enclosed/surrounded by?
The nucleus is surrounded by a double membrane(2 membranes)called the envelope, which contains pores enabling molecules to enter and leave the nucleus.
What does the nucleus contain and what are their functions?
1)The nucleus contains DNA wrapped around histone proteins in a complex called chromatin.
2)The nucleus also contains a nucleolus which is where ribosomes are made
What does the rough endoplasmic reticulum look like?
a series of flattened sacs enclosed by a membrane with ribosomes on the surface.
Function of Rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Proteins are made on these ribosomes that are transported through the ER to other parts of the cell
What does the smooth endoplasmic reticulum look like and its function?
a system of membrane bound sacs but w/o any attached ribosomes. The SER produces and processes lipids(eg reproductive hormones)
what does golgi apparatus look like?
a series of fluid-filled,flattened and curved sacs with vesicles surrounding the edges
function of golgi apparatus
modifies and packages proteins in vesicles for transport. It also produces lysosomes.
what does a lysosome look like
spherical sacs- contains digestive enzymes and bound by a single membrane
function of lysosome
Involved in the breakdown of unwanted structures within the cell and destruction of whole cells when old cells are to be replaced during development
what does mitochondria look like
oval shaped and bound by a double membrane.
the inner membrane is folded to form projections called cristae
function of mitochondria
site of the later stages of aerobic respiration
what do centrioles look like
They are hollow cylinders made up of a ring of 9 protein microtubules
function of centrioles
Involved in cell division(mitosis)
