Cell structures Flashcards
Cell Membrane
Found in all cell types, it separates the interior of cells from the outside environment.
Cytoplasm
Found in all cell types, it consists of all the material within a living cell excluding the nucleus
DNA
Gene coding of all cell types
Ribosomes
The site for protein synthesis in all cell types composed of RNA and protein.
Nucleus
A single rounded structure found in eukaryotes bound by a double membrane which contains the genetic material.
Nucleolus
A round granular structure within the nucleus, composed of proteins , DNA, RNA and creates ribosomes.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Forms an interconnected network of flattened, membrane enclosed sacks/tube like structures known as cisternae.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Contains ribosomes for protein synthesis
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Lacks ribosomes and functions in lipid manufacture/metabolism, produces steroid hormones and detoxification
Golgi apparatus
A packaging organelle with pancake shaped membranes which gather simple molecules and converts to complex molecules which are packaged into vesicles and are stored or sent. It also build lysosomes.
Lysosome
Contains enzymes for cell digestion
Peroxisome
Breaks down long chain fatty acids into medium ones
Mitochondrion
The site for cellular respiration
Flagellum
Used for cell motility
Cilium
Hair like structures that extend outward from cell surfaces which bring about the movement of the cell or surrounding medium
