Cell Structure and Functions Flashcards
From Latin cella meaning “small room” is the basic structural functional and biological unit of all know organisms
Cell
Cells that contain a nucleus and organelles and enclosed by a plasma membrane
Eukaryotic cell
Cells that do not have a true nucleus or membrane bound organelles
Prokaryotic cell
A tiny cellular structure that performs specific functions within a cell
Organelle
Covert with the membrane that allows materials to pass in and out it often called the ‘control center’ of the cell because it contains DNA
Nucleus
A semipermeable membrane that facilitate the movement of molecules inside and outside the plant or animal cell and often pictured as fluid mosaic model
Cell membrane
A vicious fluid or jelly like material where organelles are embedded its jelly like features secures the organelles in plants and animals so that they remain in place
Cytoplasm
Are called the ‘power houses’ of cells they produce much energy a plant or animal cell needs to carry out its functions
Mitochondria
The storage area of the cell it store water food and waste. animals have a very small_____ while plants as the produced through the process of photosynthesis have a being central_______
Vacuole
A series of tunnels throughout the cytoplasm they transport proteins from one part of the cell to another that is why they are called as the transport center of the cell
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
Free and functions in detoxification of lipids
Smooth ER
Contains ribosomes and releases newly made protein from the cell
Rough ER
Are the protein factories of the cell responsible for protein synthesis
Ribosomes
Receive proteins and other compounds from the ER the package this materials and distribute them to the plant and animal parts of the cell
Golgi bodies
A series of fiber made from proteins it provides structure to the cell and gives it shape
Cytoskeleton
