Cell structure 2.1.1 Flashcards
what are eukaryotic cells?
any organism whose cells contain membrane- bound organelles such as a nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts ect.
what are prokaryotic cells?
prokaryotes lack membrane bound organelles such as a nucleus, mitochondria, and are most commonly found in bacteria, and green algae
what is a nuclear envelope?
the nucleus is bound by a double membrane ne, each membrane is similar in structure to the cell surface of the plasma membrane.
what is a plasma membrane?
what the cell is bound by. It controls what goes in and out of the cell.
describe the function of a nucleus (relate to structure)
It is the largest organelle and contains the nucleolus which contains genetic material, also it controls cell activities.
describe the function of the nucleolus (relate to structure)`
It has a dense structure which creates ribonucleic acid and ribosomes which take part in RNA in protein synthesis within the cytoplasm.
describe the function of a mitochondrion (relate to structure)
Round double membrane bound organelles that’s are responsible for aerobic respiration.
The inner membrane folds = Cristae
folded into the matrix (centre part)
describe the function of a ribosome (relate to structure)
A very small organelle made of RNA and protein
