Cell structure Flashcards
A cell:
The smallest part of a living thing
What are inside cells?
Many organelles
What are cell organelles?
Cell components that perform specific functions within the cell.
Functions of cell membrane:
Controls what gets in and out of the cell
Role of the nucleus:
Controls the activities of the cell.
What is the nucleus?
Large, dark organelle in the centre of the cell
What cell’s genetic information does the nucleus contain.
DNA, protein
Double membrane:
Controls the movement of substances in and out of the nucleus, and ensures nothing of danger to the nucleus gets in.
Nuclear pores:
Allows RNA to leave the nucleus during protein-synthesis, and allows nitrogenous bases into the nucleus in DNA replication and protein synthesis.
Nucleolus:
Contains RNA, DNA, and proteins that make ribosomes
What is a semipermeable membrane in a cell?
Nucleus
Functions of chlorophyll:
Used to trap sun’s energy, allowing photosynthesis to occur.
What includes the cytoplasm?
Cytosol + organelles
Benefit of using a stain when observing cell under microscope?
Makes the cells more visible
Function of ribosomes:
Site of protein synthesis
Selective permeable:
When only some substances are allowed through
Course focus wheel function:
Brings object roughly into focus
Fine focus wheel function:
Brings object into sharp focus.
What is the cell membrane primarily made of?
phospholipids & protein
Where are organelles held?
In cytosol
Chromatin: 🧬
Refers to our chromosomes during interphase. they are elongated and thread-like structures.
Functions of the vacuole:
*Structural support
*Storage
*Waste disposal
*Protection
*Growth
