Cell structure Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
- largest organelle
- contains cell genes which control the cells activities
Describe the cytoplasm’s functions
- jelly like substance
- where the cell’s metabolic reactions take place
What does the cell membrane do in the cell?
- all cells are surrounded by it
- controls movement of substances in and out of the cell
- often partially permeable
What are the functions of the cell wall?
- non living layer on the outside of some cells
- made of carbohydrates eg. cellulose
- provides support
Describe the functions of the mitrochondria
- site of aerobic respiration
What are the functions of chloroplasts?
- found in green parts of plants
- contains chlorophyll
- absorbs light
- makes sugars in the process of photosynthesis
What are the functions of the ribosomes?
- small organelle
- builds protein in a process called transcription
What does the vacuole do in the cell?
- found in plants
- large space
- surrounded by a membrane called tonoplast
- filled with liquid called cell sap
What are the organelles in an animal cell?
ribosomes, cytoplasm, mitrochondria, nucleus, cell membrane
What organelles are found in a plant cell?
ribosomes, cytoplasm, mitrochondria, nucleus, cell membrane, vacuole, chloroplasts, cell wall
What is the importance of cell differentiation in the development of specialised cells?
- cell differentiation - process where a cell changes to become specialised
- stem cells - undifferentiated cells that have the ability to become specialised
- differentiation involves turning off or on different genes
- genes have different functions and will produce different cell types
What are the advantages of using stem cells in medicine?
- can treat a wide variety of diseases
- lots of stem cells available - better to use than waste them
Describe the disadvantages of using stem cells in medicine
- possible harm to embryo
- may not work - risky
- embryo can’t be asked - embryo’s right to life
