Cell structure Flashcards
Cell membrane
Separates the contents of the cell from its outside environment; holds all organelles together in cytoplasm, semi permeable.
Cell Wall
External structure which surrounds the cell membrane provides cell structural strength and protection; plants don’t have bones therefore need something to keep in place. PLANTS ONLY.
Cytoplasm
Watery, gel-like fluid inside the cell membrane in which organelles are suspended in, gives cell shape.
Cytoskeleton
Network of microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments. ‘Spider web’ throughout the entire cell to hold organelles in place.
Centrioles
Small pair of cylindrical structures made of microtubules wound up together. Involved in cell division in which they pull chromosomes apart.
Pili and Flagella
Hair like appendages made of microtubules and are external, held by cell membrane.
Both used to help cells move, flagella is longer.
Vacuoles
Membrane bound vesicle which contains fluid; sugars and salts dissolved in water.
Stores substances for when the cell wants to use it, found in most cells but size and quantity varies.
Plant - one large permanent vacuole; turgor pressure is water in vacuole pushes out the cell walls maintaining cells shape.
Animal - small, temporary
