Cell Structure Flashcards
Cell Membrane?
The external boundary of the cell that manages what goes in and out of the cell
Cytoplasm
The water jelly-like contents of a cell where organelles are found in
Cytoskeleton
The internal scaffolding of protein fibers within the cytoplasm of the cell
Golgi Body
A structure made of a stack of flattened channels; it packages materials for secretion from the cell
Lysosome
A small sphere formed from a Golgi Body; contains digestive enzymes
Microfilament
Protein fibers that move materials around the cytoplasm or move the entire cell
Microtubule
Fine tubes that help to maintain the shape of the cell and hold the organelles in place
Mitochondria
A structure in the cytoplasm of a cell in which aerobic respiration occurs; powerhouse of the cell making Adenosine triphosphate
Nuclear membrane
A membrane that separates the nucleus of a cell from the cytoplasm; has small pores to allow movement of RNA
Nucleus
Centermost point of a cell that manages all cell activity and holds genetic material
Nucleolus
An area inside the nucleus of a cell that is made up of RNA and proteins and is where ribosomes are made
Ribosome
Site of protein synthesis; located on rER in eukaryotic cells and or free in the cytoplasm
rER
A form of endoplasmic reticulum that is covered with ribosomes that give it a rough appearance; involved in protein synthesis
sER
A form of endoplasmic reticulum that is involved in the synthesis of lipids; in not covered with ribosomes
Lipid
Large organic molecules made up of fatty acids and glycerol
