Cell Structure Flashcards
What is a cell?
The smallest observable unit of living matter
Define cell theory
- All organisms are made of cells
- The cell is basic unit of life.
- Every new cell comes from an existing cell.
What is an organelle?
A structure within the cell that serves a specific purpose (like human organs!)
What is tissue?
A collection of cells bound together for specific purpose (muscle tissue=movement).
What structure protects the cell from invaders and regulates flow in and out of the cell?
Cell membrane
What are the little legs or long whip-like tail that move the cell called?
Cilia (little legs) or flagella (whip-like tail)
What is the wet, Jello-like interior of the cell called?
Cytoplasm - cyto (“cell”)+plasm (“plasma”)
What are the “waste treatment plants” of the cell called?
lysosomes
What purpose do the Golgi Bodies serve in the cell?
Delivery of materials to other parts of the cell (Post Office)
What are the packages the Golgi Bodies make called?
Vesicles (like vehicles!)
What are the “power plants” of the cell called?
Mitochondria (The “mighty/powerful”)
What does the SMOOTH endoplasmic reticulum make?
Carbs and Fats
What does the Rough ER have that the Smooth ER doesn’t?
Ribosomes (“R” for rough/ribosome)
What do the “factories” (the ribosomes) make?
Proteins
What is the “big boss in City Hall” called?
The nucleus
