Cell structure Flashcards
Cells
Cells are the basic units of life. The parts inside a cell are known as organelles. Different types of cells can have different organelles.
Cytoplasm
Site of cell reactions. Found in all cells
Cell membrane
Controls entry and exit of molecules to cells. Found on all cells
Nucleus
Contains genetic info/DNA. Controls cell activities. Not found in bacterium cells
Ribosomes
Sites of protein synthesis (build-up). Found in all cells
Mitochondria
Sites of aerobic respiration. Found in all but bacterium cells.
Cell wall
Gives the cell support and structure. Found in all but animal cells
Vacuole
Contains cell sap. Found in all but bacterium and animal cells.
Chloroplasts
Contains chlorophyll. Traps light for photosynthesis. Found in green plant cells.
Plasmid
Additional rings of DNA. Found in bacterium cells
How to calculate the size of cells in a microscope field of view
Field of view ÷ number of cells that can be viewed across the diameter.
Plant cell walls
The cell wall of a plant cell is made of cellulose fibres. Its strong, rigid and slightly elastic so is ideal for uptake of water.
