Cell Respiration Flashcards
What is the function of mitochondria?
Produces ATP through aerobic respiration
Why do muscle cells have more mitochondria?
They require more energy for movement
What are the folds inside mitochondria called?
Cristae, which increase the surface area for ATP production
What is ATP?
Adenosine Triphosphate, the main energy carrier in cells
How is ATP formed?
By adding a phosphate grouop to ADP (adenosine diphosphate)
What are the 3 main stages of cellular respiration?
Glycolosis, citric acid cycle(Kreb cycle), and electron transport chain
Where does glycolysis occur?
In the cytoplasm
Where do the citric acid cycle and the electron transport chain occur?
In the mitochondria
What is the purpose of cellular respiration?
To break down glucose and produce ATP
What molecules start cellular respiration?
Glucose
What happens during glycolysis?
Glucose is split into two pyruvate molecules, producing ATP and NADH
