cell parts and functions Flashcards
centrioles
help cell division, organizes microtubules during mitosis - looks like a piece of pasta - only found in animal cell
Ribosomes
builds protons by linking amino acids together. Found in cytoplasm or rough er
chromatin
mix of DNA and protein - squiggly lines around nucleolus
Nucleolus
Makes ribosomes - ball inside of the nucleus
Nucleus
brain of the cell. controls growth, reproduction and metabolism - the shell outside the nucleolus
Lysosome
cells waste disposal system. Enzymes break down waste, old cell parts and invading bacteria. Looks like circle with dots inside
Smooth ER
No ribosomes attached and makes fats. Looks like coral without dots
Rough ER
Has ribosomes attached and makes proteins. Looks like coral.
Cell membrane
like the skin. Controls what goes in and out. Made out of a double layer of fats and proteins - looks like shell.
Vacuole
Storage containers inside of cell. Stores water, waste and nutrients. Circle with dots inside.
Golgi Apparatus
Takes proteins and fats for ER, modifies and packages into vesicles to be spent to other parts or out of the cell. Look likes a paint splatter with coral.
Cytoskeleton
Frame work of the cell. Helps cell maintain its shape and helps with movement. Looks like lines in cytoplasm
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance inside of the cell. Fills up space between cell membrane and nucleus and holds organelles in place. Where chemical reactions happen.
Mitochondria
Takes nutrients and turns them into energy through cellular respiration. half a bean with squiggly lines.
Cell wall
Thick layer around the cell membrane. provide protection and helps the plant maintain its structure - only found in plant cell
Chloroplasts
Contains chlorophyll. Makes the plant food. Turns sunlight C02 and H20 into glucose and oxygen. Looks like a pot of money - only found in plant cell
Central Vacuole
Large storage container. Helps keep the plant cell rigid - stand up straight and not wilt. Big bean in the middle. - only found in plant cell.
