Cell Parts (also called "Organelles") Flashcards
Cell membrane
Gives the cell its shape and to control what comes in and out of the cell.
Nucleus
Houses the cell’s DNA.
Cell wall
Only found in plants and bacteria-job is to give the cell more structure & support. It is OUTSIDE of the cell membrane.
Mitochondria
Creates energy for the cell (through cellular respiration).
Cytoplasm
The jello-like substance, mostly made of water, that takes up most of the space of the cell. The other cell parts are suspended in the cytoplasm.
DNA/chromosomes
The hereditary material of the cell. *Think: things that are INHERITED (hereditary) are given to you from people that were alive before you. In the case of your DNA, it is inherited from your parents.
Chloroplasts
Capture energy from the sun for use in photosynthesis (the process plants use to create energy for themselves as well as oxygen and other sugars).
Vacuoles
Storage spaces for the cell.
Large Central Vacuole
A large vacuole found in plant cells that is used to store and pump water out of the cell.
