cell parts Flashcards
The smallest unit that can perform all life processes.
cell
A membrane-bond organelle that contains the cell’s DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth.
nucleus
The fluid inside a cell.
cytoplasm
A phospholipid
cell membrane
A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cell.
cell wall
In eukaryotic cells the cell organelle that is surrounded by two membranes and that is the site of cellular respiration.
Mitochondria / Mitochondrion
(in green plant cells) a plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
Chloroplast
A stack of small flat sacs formed by membranes inside the cell’s cytoplasm. The Golgi complex is a cell organelle.
Golgi complex
a network of membranous tubules within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell, continuous with the nuclear membrane. It usually has ribosomes attached and is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.
Endoplasmic reticulum
a minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells. They bind messenger RNA and transfer RNA to synthesize polypeptides and proteins.
Ribosome
A lysosome is a membrane-bound cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes. Lysosomes are involved with various cell processes. They break down excess or worn-out cell parts. They may be used to destroy invading viruses and bacteria.
Lysosome
a space or vesicle within the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosed by a membrane and typically containing fluid.
Vacuole
any of a number of organized or specialized structures within a living cell.
Organelle
a microscopic single-celled organism that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles. Prokaryotes include the bacteria and cyanobacteria
Prokaryote
an organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; eukaryotes include animals, plants, and fungi, but not archaebacteria.
Eukaryote
